About Department of Pharmacy

Message from the Manager Pharmacy

Welcome to the department of Pharmacy!

It gives me immense pleasure to utter a few words about the credentials of our department. I’m proud to be a pharmacy professional in LRH. Pharmacy is an honorable profession with noble goals and holds the trust and respect of the public we serve. The trust and respect that we enjoy isn’t something that comes easy.  We have to work at it. The public trusts us as knowledgeable professionals, to dispense pharmaceuticals and advice, as well as to be the gatekeepers for narcotics substance abuse and dependence on medications and other prescription drugs.

In Government sector where the resources are scanty, we come up with ideas that are practical, dependable and exert least burden on our resources. We all healthcare professionals aims one approach, that is the best patient outcomes, and they are only achieved with better teamwork and collaboration in medical triad i-e Nurse, Pharmacist and Physician. A Pharmacist if provided a better environment can do wonders in health care system. Pharmaceutical care interventions can make our patients medications more accurate, we can reduce our medication therapy expenses by making therapies more specific and rational, thus causing reduction in the patient’s length of stay in hospital as well as patient re admissions due to drug related problems, similarly, by preventing misuse of antibiotics we can benefit our community and global health. A Pharmacist can benefit the Patient, Hospital as well as the community.

May Allah S.W.T help us to serve more efficiently,

Muhammad Amir

History

The pharmacy department was started in LRH, back in 1984 under the leadership of Mr Abid Hayat, who is also known as the first Hospital pharmacist of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He was joined by some other renowned names of the Pharmacy profession in KPK like Madam Tehniyat (former Sr. Pharmacist LRH, former Chief Pharmacist HMC), Mr Javed Muhammad (former Sr. Pharmacist LRH, Chief Pharmacist at Directorate of Drug control & Pharmacy services KPK), During that era maintaining the basic supply chain and record-keeping were the main challenges and for that purpose, the basic setups were developed. Separate pharmacies for accident & emergency and cardiology blocks were established.
The legacy was carried with many remarkable achievements under the tenure of Dr Shoukat Sahad, some notable advancements were the creation of a separate Inpatient dispensing unit (IPD) Pharmacy in 2016 to provide the pharmacy supplies to all the inpatient units of LRH. To maintain the best possible quality of cold chain items, state of the art biological refrigerators were acquired, making it the only pharmacy department to have such facility in public sector hospitals at that time.  25 newly appointed pharmacists were tasked to study and reshape the drugs distribution system for modernization and e-ordering in LRH. Pharmacy working shifts were increased to 2 shifts and for the first time in history, Inpatient pharmacy started to provide coverage in evening shift as well as on weekends and public holidays.  A state-of-the-art centralized pharmacy warehouse was established in 2017.  To cover the medications requirement of one of the largest gynae department in KPK, a separate pharmacy for gynae labour rooms was established in 2017 to provide medications 24/7 to the gynae labour rooms via electronic ordering of standard order sets and other items. Thus, the Gynae satellite pharmacy became the first online Pharmacy in LRH with the electronic ordering of medications.
