Department of Imaging and Interventional Radiology

Image

The Department has a structured residency program, which inducts trainees twice a year for a four-year training program in FCPS, two years in MCPS and annual induction for two years post fellowship specialist registrar training in both diagnostic and interventional radiology. The Department also offers a structured Radiographers Training Program.  The duration of the program is two years. The Department is regulated and licensed by the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) and offers 24/7 services that cater to the needs of inpatients, outpatients, emergency patients and institutional based private patients as well as private diagnostic referrals from outside by providing the best possible diagnostic services developed on modern lines of a filmless and paperless system by a well-established fully equipped picture archiving and communication system (PAC’S ). It has the edge of being the first public sector hospital in KPK to not only have a filmless and paperless service but to set up a state-of-the-art Interventional Radiology service. It is fortified with a team of Radiologists, Medical Physicists, Certified Radiographers, sonologist and IT & support staff.  The general radiography procedures are carried out on Digital Radiography System which has minimized the patient waiting time, radiation dose & report turnaround time. It provides additional facility for simultaneous viewing of images by multiple users. Department of Radiology is using Voice Recognition System to transcribe radiology reports which helps in decreasing report turnaround time and increase patient satisfaction with quality reporting. It is equipped with 7 x-ray machines: a combination of 03 integrated digital and 04 retrofit to cater to inpatients, outpatients and private patients. Additionally, two retrofit x ray systems are dedicated for casualty. The department is providing portable services at 12 stations in the hospital inclusive of trauma bay, intensive care and nursery. It is also providing C arm services in multiple sites in the hospital. There are 3 CT scans, which are a combination of 160 slice and 4 slices for elective patients and a 16 slice in in Emergency department. The IR suite has a state-of-the-art angiography suite and a high-end color Doppler. Additionally, at least a dozen ultrasound /doppler machines are comprising the ultrasound service. Mammography services are also available on CR system.

All of this has resulted in increased throughput and enhanced quality of patient care.

About Radiology

What is interventional radiology?
Interventional Radiology (also known as I.R is the minimally invasive, image-guided treatment of medical conditions that once required open surgery. By using the power of advanced imaging (ultrasound, X-rays. CT scans, MRI scans and other innovative methods), interventional radiologists can see inside your body and treat complex conditions with the help of the devices such as needles, catheters, balloons and stents to open blocked blood vessels, block bleeding vessels, treatment of aneurysms, drain fluid collections, drain bile ducts and kidneys, perform biopsies and treat many other conditions less invasively and with unprecedented precision.
How interventional radiology works?
Interventional radiologists differ from conventional surgeons by using digital technology to make repairs in the body and by making tiny or no incisions. Most interventional radiology procedures begin with the prick of a needle. Then the interventional radiologist guides a thin wire and a catheter through a blood vessel to reach and treat the source of the pain or disease. The radiologist watches the inside of the body on monitor screens & accordingly uses the instruments.
Advantages of interventional radiology

Ø  Interventional radiology offers several advantages over traditional invasive procedures:

Ø  Less invasive & performed through a cut of the size of a pencil's tip

Ø  No large scars, risks or pain & recovery time is significantly reduced

Ø  Most I.R procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis (shorter hospital stay)

Ø  Moderate sedation can be used instead of general anesthesia.

Treatments via interventional radiology
Interventional Radiologists have developed procedures that can help a number of medical conditions. Some of the most common Interventional Radiology procedures are as follow:
Vascular Disease

Ø   Angioplasty and Stenting for Peripheral Vascular Disease

Ø  Venography for Upper and Lower Extremities

Ø  Peripheral Angiography using Carbon Dioxide for Impaired Renal Function

Ø  Venous Angioplasty, Stenting and Recanalization

Ø  Intravascular Foreign Body Retrieval

Ø  Thoracic and Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair

Trauma
Embolization for Hemorrhage Control Following Arterial or Visceral Injury
Oncological

Ø TACE — Transarterial Chemoembolization for Liver Cancer and Metastatic Disease

Ø  RFA — Radiofrequency Ablation of Lung, Liver and Renal Tumors

Ø  PEI — Percutaneous Ethanol Injection

Ø  Port - A - Cath Insertion for Chemotherapy

Ø  Tunneled and Non-tunneled Central Venous Access

Ø  CT Guided Nerve Block

Hepatobiliary

Ø  Cholangiography and PTBD

Ø  TIPS — Transjugular portosystemic shunt placement

Renal and Dialysis Related

Ø  Nephrostomy and Ureteric Stent Placement

Ø  Temporary and Long Term Dialysis Access Catheters

Ø  Central Venous Angioplasty and Recannalization

Ø  Renal Angioplasty and Stenting Including Transplant Kidneys

Ø  Fistulogram and Fistuloplasty

Ø  Varicocele Embolization

Gynecology and Obstetrics

Ø  Uterine Fibroid Embolization

Ø  Management of placental abnormalities during delivery (accrete, increta, percreta, previa)

Ø  Gonadal Vein Embolization for Pelvic Congestion Syndrome

Ø  Fallopian Tube Recanalization for Infertility

Radiology Services Offered

Diagnostic procedures performed by the radiology team include the following:

Bone Density Scan

Our noninvasive bone densitometer, located at LRH for Women's Health, detects calcium levels in bones and helps determine if the patient is at risk for osteoporosis.

Mammography

Mammography is the most common screening method for breast cancer. It uses X-rays to help detect tumors or abnormal growths in the breasts.

Computed Tomography (CT)

A computed tomography (CT) scan assembles a series of X-ray images, or slices, to create a more detailed view of the inside of the body. Our state-of-the-art CT scanners allow our team to perform multiple, advanced-imaging procedures such as CT angiography, which helps in diagnosing coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, pulmonary embolisms (blood clots) and other cardiovascular conditions.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound, or sonography, is the least invasive imaging procedure available. With sonograms, our specialists look inside the body to evaluate various organs and vessels.

Nuchal Translucency

Used in conjunction with ultrasound technology, this screening test is performed in the first trimester of a pregnancy and can check for the risk of certain conditions such as Down syndrome, chromosome abnormalities and heart problems.

X-ray

This diagnostic procedure uses electromagnetic waves to take images of the body. It helps your doctor to look inside your body without having to make an incision.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses radio waves to create a picture of the inside of the body. At LRH, we routinely perform MRIs to help evaluate and diagnose numerous conditions. We also conduct several specialty imaging procedures such as brain and spine MRI, brain spectroscopy for studying brain tissue, magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and venography (MRV). We also perform MRCP.

Lady Reading Hospital

It was established in 1927and it is just 200 meters away in the south of the Grand Trunk Road, behind the famous historical Qila Balahisar. Famous MasjidMuhabat Khan,Ander Shehr bazaar, Qissa Khawani bazaar and Khyber bazaar is across the road of LRH. LRH is just outside historical wall in the jurisdiction of cantonment board. The anecdote of the hospital of its coming into being is that His Excellency Lord Reading, viceroy of India from 1921 to 1926, happened to visit Peshawar.
